![]() ![]() ![]() The food bank seeks innovative ways to improve the operation and nutritional content of the food distributed. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee staff and Board of Directors is dedicated to help provide food assistance and help stabilize lives in the eight county region for years to come. Over 40,000 individuals each month are served through the food bank’s partner agencies and direct service programs. In fiscal year 2021 the food bank provided 16.6 million meals (13.8 million pounds of food) to people in need in the eight county region. The food bank is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization located in Kingsport, Tennessee and is a member of Feeding America, the nation’s largest food bank network. An affiliate of the Feeding America Network of Food Banks, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee’s Second Harvest is the only food bank serving the eight county region incorporating Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi, and Washington counties. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee has led the effort to end hunger in Northeast Tennessee since 1986. ![]() Through MealConnect, food that previously might have gone to waste- such as a small load of lean meat from a local butcher-is recovered by one of the food bank’s member-food pantries or meal programs and is immediately directed to families in need.Our mission is to feed the hungry in Northeast Tennessee by securing and distributing food and engaging the community in the fight to end hunger through regional partnerships, programs, and ed ucation. ![]() When a food pantry located a couple miles away from the donor can pick up the product, it saves valuable food bank resources and the need for expensive transportation. We are a member of the Feeding America Network and a 501 (c) 3 organization. MealConnect enables food banks to easily oversee the relationships, improve data management and eliminate barriers to food rescue. Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tennessee has led the effort to end hunger in the region since 1986, serving Carter, Greene, Hancock, Hawkins, Johnson, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties. Second Harvest provides the materials to store donated items in a food-safe manner as well as provide in-person training for all volunteers in the program. The volunteers will use their vehicles to pick up items and drop them off at a local pantry or hot meal site from our community partners. MealConnect depends on local Food Recovery volunteers.To encourage companies and organizations to donate healthy food that would otherwise go to waste, they are protected from criminal and civil liability under the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act.
